“If you ever get the chance to experience hostel life, give it 110%, don’t go in half hearted, it really is a life changing opportunity. It changed my life and I’ll be forever grateful.â€
This is the advice Mikaela Tattersall would give students commencing at Aboriginal Hostel Limited’s secondary education hostels. It is advice that certainly paid off for Mikaela who is one of AHL’s Year 12 graduates from 2019.
Mikaela moved from Brewarrina to Dubbo three years ago and through her incredible determination, excellent attitude and organisation is now undertaking her first year in a Bachelor Degree in Veterinary Technology, staying on campus at Charles Stuart University.
Mikaela said it was challenging being away from her home town and she missed her family, especially her little brother, but the staff at the hostel made it feel like home and supported her throughout her journey.
Kristy Hill, the Head of Boarding at the Dubbo student hostel, has been part of the team supporting Mikaela since her arrival. Kristy is incredibly proud of what Mikaela has achieved and said she is very well respected and a great role model for other students at the hostel. Kristy is looking forward to celebrating more Year 12 graduates this year.
Mikaela credits advice from Kristy, when times were tough, to helping her reach her goals. That advice was:
‘Great things never came from comfort zones. If you want to achieve great things, then you have to go beyond your comfort zone. You won’t get anywhere by doing what you are used to. You need to go beyond what you think you can do in order to see your full potential’.
AHL is hoping we can support many more students move out of their comfort zone and achieve their dreams. AHL is currently supporting 125 secondary education students and 48 tertiary students across education hostels in Dubbo, Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, Thursday Island, Kununurra and Tennant Creek.
