My appointment was on the 7/7, I had to leave with my tax not being lodged as the agent was running behind. I was assured it would be lodged asap. I received an email on the 13/7 advising they could not lodge as I had to update my name with the ATO, which i did and responded the following day. I received an email on the 17/7 saying "Now we can lodge your return". I thought that was the end of it, annoyed it was 10 days after my initial appointment but whatever. On the 30/7 I checked the ATO website and it said that my tax had only been lodged on the 29/7. When i checked with H&R block they confirmed that yes it had only been lodged on the 29/7. When i asked why it took so long they said there was an issue with my income from X company (a company i did not receive any income from in this FY) followed by an error from their end which prevented them from lodging. When I asked about the incorrect company and why I did not at the very least receive word of the delay they failed to respond. On the scale of things my return is incredibly simple, normally i do it myself, but with the covid WFH payments i wanted a professional to make sure it was correct. My experience has certainly not been professional which is disappointing considering the 174 i paid.

Arrived on time to a cold, unwelcoming reception. Waited close to 25 minutes with no acknowledgement. Agent was extremely flustered and I felt that I was intruding in their time. Refund process was very slow, not personable at all and I didn’t feel that I was ever set up to successfully get the highest return possible which HR Block Shailer Park claim to find. I had a log of all my days working from home and provided this though the agent took some very round about steps to calculate it different - then charged me additional for the pleasure of them doing it, even though I had the log as requested from my previous tax years. I queried why I was being charged 174 for a basic tax return (I am in a marketing/account management role - nothing particularly in depth, no side business, no additional incomes or investments). The agent replied that it was because they had to do some complicated calculations for my work from home status - though I had a log and provided it to them the whole time? I challenged this and that I had to wait 25 mins without acknowledgment or apology to which the agent agreed and charged me 144 (still the highest I’ve ever paid). My return was 50% LESS than last year. The only reason I provided a 2 star and not a 1 star is that the agent allowed for me to call Medibank who’d not provided my info to the ATO for some reason and came up with a solution for me to receive my refund when my initial bank account wasn’t accepted. I left feeling angry and ripped off. Other colleagues I’ve spoken too in similar work from home set ups who saw an accountant did not have the same experience as me or get charged huge fees. I would not recommend HR Block Shailer Park (or anything HR Block if this is a standard practice)
