My daughter and I loved New York Dialects. The music was so unusual, totally interesting, where much modern music is atonal and deafening. Many thanks to the pianist. The Australian Ballet troupe is outstanding. The opening scenes were breathtakingly beautiful and the lyrical flow of the first ballet just put me in a tranquil mood all the better to enjoy the following two dialects. I preferred the first and the last as the second dialect had many ugly movements. I realise of course that the technique shown covered the gamut of human movement and the skill set has to include all movements. I am in awe of the courage, application, skill and finesse shown by these young people. I thank them for taking me away from the city into a magical world.

Following is a truthful & very frank review....Balanchine’s Serenade was enjoyable & the dancing wonderful but lacked real interest. On the other hand, Watermark was not at all enjoyable. It was absolutely ridiculous. It was like watching a whole lot of bewildered & demented folk on stage. I felt sorry for both audience & dancers. Very little actual dancing or enjoyment, and there was audible dismayed type laughter coming from the audience all around us. AND, the artistic director should be using Australian talent for choreography & composer, not foreign (as in New Yorkers). I hope this is not a taste of what’s to come under Hallberg’s direction. If so, after being a subscriber for decades, I shall cancel my subscription. Ballet for me is enjoying the extraordinary skill, gracefulness and athleticism of the dancers. Four Temperaments was more enjoyable, (at least there was dancing), but still a far cry from the usual enjoyment we are accustomed to at the Ballet. Sorry, but someone has to tell the truth! For the dancer’s sakes, the audience didn’t exhibit any form of disappointment, however, conversations on exiting, told a different story. In all the decades I have been a subscriber this is the only time I have felt this disappointed. I will say it was wonderful for both audience & dancers to be back after such a long time, even though disappointing. Not all, but most of the music was enjoyable.
I thoroughly enjoyed New York Dialects. It was wonderful to see the Australian Ballet's return to the stage with such a strong performance. In terms of display of skill The Four Temperaments was the highlight for me. Serenade was simply ethereal and I liked Watermark more than I thought I would (although I didn't warm up to the costume design).
I am not mad about modern ballet. A lot of posing and not a lot of dancing to my mind. What they did was wonderful as ever. My fave was the middle one....which apparently was the least well liked.
Most disappointing to get to the ballet and find no cast sheets available , so we saw the whole performance knowing nothing of the title, music, composer or cast. Loved the dancing and the music, but cost cutting in the form of no cast sheet is a mistake! Why not send out via email the details of the performances, or display on the surtitles screen above the stage what ballet is being performed next.? The stand featuring a QR code for the cast was helpful, but no one I saw was able to download the information and I could not on my phone either, certainly not in the 2 minutes before the show began. Other than that it was wonderful.
Adored Serenade; simply sublime. I will not hold the Company accountable for the second Balanchine work which was executed beautifully but simply did not engage me. Third work was a consolation. Always an inestimable pleasure to watch AB. Thank you all.
Great to be back in the theatre, enjoyed most of it. Did not enjoy Watermark. However I did download the cast list, but would have liked it to have at least mentioned intervals and even a bit of a story. Serenade was lovely. I have to mention the catering or simply lack there of. Virtually no food at the outlet at the top of the stairs after checking in. No indication on signage as to Gluten free. I was just taken aback. People asking for simple things like an ice cream at interval. I saw more food out during the second interval, non of which was available at 6pm who had been travelling for 3 hours to get there.
Saw it today ! A wonderful program... 1st & 2nd ballets preferred. "Serenade" was just beautiful and extremely well danced but the company, and the music cannot be surpassed. The costuming superb.... The "Four Temperaments" also by Balanchine was was interesting choreography-wise and also well and enthusiastically performed. They did show that they were enjoying dancing it immensely. But "Watermark" wasn't to my liking so much ,they seemed to do a lot of nothing much "a lot of kangaroo hops).. and that kind of musical background does nothing for me. otherwise a very enjoyable outing to our wonderful Australian Ballet.
