Sydney Dance Company Reviews | Rating 4.7 out of 5 stars (8 reviews)

Sydney Dance Company is located in Dawes Point, Australia on Wharf 4/5, Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, 15 Hickson Rd. Sydney Dance Company is rated 4.7 out of 5 in the category dance company in Australia. Dance changes you. More than simply witnessing something beautiful, or engaging with culture, to experience dance is to be positively altered. From performances at the Joyce Theatre in New York, to the Grand in Shanghai, the Stanislavsky in Moscow and the Sydney Opera House at home, Sydney Dance Company has proven that there are no passive observers in a contemporary dance audience. The reward of truly moving audiences, and the raw pride of sharing Australian art with the world has driven our ensemble of 16 dancers, led by Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela, to become one of the world’s strongest forces in contemporary dance. Alongside Bonachela’s original works, our programs have featured guest choreographers like Jacopo Godani, Alexander Ekman, Gideon Obarzanek and Cheng Tsung-Lung as well as collaborations with the Sydney Festival, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, David Jones and composers Bryce Dessner, Nick Wales, 48nord and Ezio Bosso. Sydney Dance Company has a broad community beyond the practice and performance of our lead dancers. We believe in the universality of dance, and with the largest public dance class program in Australia, we help over 80,000 people a year connect with the grace, strength and creativity that lives within all of us. Our nation-wide education program offers a strategic curriculum targeting primary and secondary students through to career focused study for pre-professional dancers and university graduates.

There are so many classes available for all levels of performers. There are also many different styles available for all different types of performers with expert teachers. I love that there are ballet and tap classes available. I also love that in all the lessons we work on technique and foundation skills, but also get to learn a combo and have fun. The teachers are friendly and let you take class at your own pace. They help you to improve by giving feedback when needed. All the teachers have great knowledge in the style that they teach and have much experience in the industry. I enjoy going to the studios and I attend classes on a regular basis.

After being advised to stay home if unwell, by the company itself, I decided not to attend a dance class with the hope of transferring the credit to be used at another class when I was feeling better. Admin staff told me to show a medical certificate or my credit will be lost. It would cost me more to get a medical certificate than it would for the dance classes. Also not quite sure the doctor would be happy wasting their time for a common cold. Understand policies are in place but didn't expect to be met with such a lack of compassion. Disappointed to say the least. *Edit* A different member of staff did get back in touch saying that the email was misread and that I could in fact change my dates to be used with in a certain time frame. Thank you.

SDC has invented a new dance style no one asked for - Bikram Dance. The government and corporate sponsors gave them a bunch of cash and instead of spending it on the studios, they dropped all of it on the reception and offices spaces. We went from 2 fans and air con at the old Ultimo studios to 1 fan and no air con. It gets so hot in there that you easily leave numerous classes looking like you just got out of a pool with all your clothes on. It’s absolutely ridiculous and dangerous. Despite feedback from numerous students, management chooses to ignore and do absolutely nothing. They blame “heritage” issues for not being able to install more fans but that same heritage issue had no problems installing the one initial fan as well as not one but SIX pipped gas heaters. Management are arrogant and talk down to people with no regard to the health and safety of the paying students that they are there to help.

I'm really enjoying Louie's beginner's jazz class. Yes it's challenging, and no you won't know what you're doing after one class. It's fun, great for my body and mind and something that I want to work on to get better. Thanks Louie.

Sydney's best spot for adult dance classes. Great variety of classes with world-class dance teachers. Ballet classes are the most popular so you need to book the popular classes well in advance, which can be a nuisance.
