I cannot speak highly enough of Dr Hilda High. Dr High is a genuinely caring and knowledgeable lady who is able to impart highly technical medical jargon in a way which makes it easy to understand. No question was 'too stupid' to ask and she patiently answered them all. I never felt rushed in my consultations (a rare quality amongst Dr's I find!). Dr High's receptionist, Deborah, deserves to be mentioned also as her kindness and helpfulness was just what I needed during what was a very stressful time in my life. Thank you Dr High and Deborah!

No one wants to have to visit a Genetic Oncologist but if you find yourself in the situation where you need the expertise of such a specialist, as a patient I warmly recommend Dr Hilda High. When you walk into Dr High’s rooms, there is an immediate sense of serenity and calm. This is enormously helpful, when a patient may be feeling quite nervous as a great deal seems to be at stake. Dr High’s staff are particularly kind and considerate and go out of their way to be helpful. Genetic oncology is complex and not something most people have much familiarity with. Dr High gave us all the time we needed, explaining, as simply as she could, the challenges of how genetic factors can impact on a family but also how this new science can provide risk assessments which were not available to previous generations. She is obviously dedicated to this field of medicine and she answered questions and explained everything we needed to know carefully and thoroughly, with gentle consideration. When our results came back sooner than expected, her staff offered us the opportunity to return earlier so as not to have to wait longer than necessary. We were fortunate - our results were negative. But we left knowing that a difficult series of consultations was conducted with intelligence, expertise and consideration.

We were deep in drought and cancer treatment when Dr High's assistant slotted me in for a cancellation. An appointment with the regional public services looked likely to take months. Dr High zoomed in to us on the farm with a Medicare covered Telehealth conference. A rapport was easily established thanks to her friendly manner, clear speech and the visuals. It felt much like a face to face consult - even slower satellite internet was good enough. For a full hour Dr High gave us a lesson in genetics with metaphors suited to a lay person, and point form information flashed up on the screen as she spoke. Blood sample collection was done at our regional centre and six weeks later, we again met by Skype with Dr High for the results. Again, a helpful and informative process - all of which was free other than paying for the blood sample collection. How grateful I was to have face to face access to such a specialist without leaving the farm.

Unfortunately I would not recommend Dr High as I found her approach very scripted and not personalised. She asked for a family history before the appointment and then asked for the same information again at the appointment. Then on the written report she reported the information incorrectly. In the appointment she said there were higher risk factors for individuals of a particular Jewish decent but when I told her I had a significant amount of Jewish heritage she did not explain how that would apply to/ impact me. The initial consultation was almost 500 then to go back to get the results was another 250. Luckily my results were negative but it cost me 250 for 10 minutes of her time to tell me that. Would definitely recommend looking into another doctor for your genetic testing.

Dr High is one of the most professional medical practitioners that I have visited. She made what could have been an intimidating experience, a much more pleasant one with her deep knowledge and manner in which she delivers information and results. Her reception staff are also most helpful and friendly. I could not recommend Sydney Cancer Genetics more highly.
