I have immensely enjoyed learning Spanish at UQ's IML. The classes have always contained useful content and the teaches are excellent. Even during this year when IML made the switch from face-face learning to online learning, our teacher was well prepared and incredibly enthusiastic which really encouraged a high level of engagement and overall made the classes still so enjoyable. If you have ever thought about studying a language, I recommend the Institute of Modern Languages.

Studying Dutch at IML was an amazing experience during my semester abroad. You will find a variety of present day languages and experienced staff. Having attended numerous language classes in other schools in Europe I must say that the IML learning experience was most efficient due to outstanding teaching methods.
I took Croatian Short Course, first time studying after five years of work - a fun, well-thought-out course and a good way to dip a toe in to full or part time study at university. Staff very helpful.
Rude staff, disorganised, unprofessional! The organisers and office admin staff are rude, unhelpful and difficult to contact. Would recommend other language institutes with better set ups and organisational skills.
I've been studying German at IML for over a year now and would absolutely recommend. Classes have always been small and intimate, with plenty of help from our tutor when needed and a great vibe with other classmates- everyone there is passionate about what they're learning. Our tutor Sarah is fantastic, a native speaker with incredible knowledge and I can never find a word she can't translate! I love how we speak in German all through the class and there's a big focus on practical language (and cultural) skills, but we also always have a laugh because sometimes learning languages makes no sense at all... Even after a long day working full time and studying at university, I still love coming to class on a Wednesday evening because it's just so much fun and worth the hard yards at the end- if you do the optional exam you get a certificate to prove your progress, and it's always good to have the affiliation with UQ for extra resources and legitimacy etc. too.
The student services team were really supportive when I was enrolling in my french class, and had all the answers about what equipment and materials I would need. They were even able to point me toward additional learning materials in the IML in-house library to help me kick my learning up a notch to include pop culture and career related language. Il n'y a pas de meilleur endroit pour étudier. J'aime IML.
I did a Mandarin short course with IML. The short course was an introduction to the Mandarin language and also exposed me to the culture of China. My teacher was very experienced in teaching languages and also created a friendly environment where all students felt comfortable trying out some of the more difficult Mandarin pronunciations. My teacher's own language learning experience was very inspiring. She was fluent in English, Mandarin and Russian and had plenty of experience in teaching all three languages to students of different backgrounds. All our classes involved many types of teaching methods to improve our learning. As I mentioned earlier, our teacher also taught us about Chinese culture and history. This is because IML tries to expose you to cultures too when you take its language courses. The entire course was an enriching experience and I highly recommend IML to anyone thinking of taking a language course.
I'm having an amazing time studying Polish at IML, it's such a great class with a really pasaionate tutor!
