Mindfulness helps us to live more skilfully with uncertainty as we face the times ahead and for the times ahead, however they unfold.  Our Core Values Respect for the unique experience of each person Compassion and empathy is at the core of our way of teaching Integrity underpins out approach to our responsibilities as teachers and professionals The human dignity of every person is at the heart of our way of engaging with those who come to learn at MCFM Excellence is valued by all our teachers who have undertaken ongoing professional development and have a regular mindfulness practice.   Melbourne Centre for Mindfulness Teachers   Our teachers have all been trained by the Mindfulness Training Institute of Australia. Mindfulness invites us to live life as if it really matters – being in the present moment with open-hearted presence and kindness towards ourselves. When you are aware in this moment, you are aware that this is your life. Then you are not waiting for the weekend or for some project to be finished for you to have a life. Every moment is your life. In very stressful situations you can move into the actuality of the situation and find ways to move with it and regulate your own reactivity to it so that you are not running away and you are not pushing through anything but you are allowing things to unfold as they do. That is the heart of creativity and that way we get the most work done with the least distraction and the least effort.   One of the most difficult things to do as human beings is to be present in our own lives and to be kind towards ourselves and less judgmental of ourselves. Mindfulness is a way of being, a way of being awake and being yourself. The present … is right now, in the midst of whatever is happening. Mindfulness involves some discipline and it does take some time. But what else is there to do if you’re missing your entire life? Whatever moment you decide to reconnect with your life that moment will be now. We only have moments of now. Why not make the most of them? Now. Jon Kabat-Zinn What is Mindfulness? Mindfulness is a way of paying wise attention to whatever is happening in our lives. Mindfulness involves bringing conscious and deliberate attention to what we are experiencing from moment to moment with curiosity and kindness and without judgement. We don’t have to try to be mindful or try to be relaxed. Mindfulness is simply about being present again and again to all that is pleasant and unpleasant as we go about our daily lives. There are three aspects of mindfulness: Attention – choosing to be awake and aware Intention – purposeful decision to pay attention Attitude – open curiosity to what we are aware of in the moment with gentleness and kindheartedness. This is about doing something for ourselves – learning to take care of ourselves, allowing access to our own resources for coping, growing & healing. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Mindfulness Based Stress reduction (MBSR) is an eight week experiential program. In this course you will learn to cultivate life long tools that will help you live more fully with resilience and to manage better the challenges and demands of everyday life. This program offers guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices, gentle mindful movement of the body, dialogue and discussion in a group setting. The MBSR program involves 2½ hour classes once a week for eight weeks and a full day retreat. Guided mindful meditation Mindful movement practices An exploration of the effects of stress on the body and mind Learning tools for applying mindfulness in everyday life Provides opportunities to discuss what has been experienced in the class and in home practice A willingness to commit to attending all eight classes and the all day retreat will ensure the greatest opportunity for achieving maximum benefit from the MBSR program. How will MBSR benefit me? Improved resilience in the face of stress Greater sense of meaning and purpose in life Increased sense of contentment with life as it is Greater levels of attention and concentration More self compassion Greater capacity for creativity and problem solving Improved immunity Diminished suffering from pain and anxiety MBSR was established in 1979 by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The program was developed for people suffering chronic illness and stress that was not responsive to conventional medical treatment. MBSR introduces participants to a range of mindfulness practices that foster awareness, acceptance and compassion towards their own internal experiences including thoughts, emotional states, body sensations and behaviours. There has been a significant body of research that demonstrates the wide-ranging benefits of MBSR. This course, Mindfulness in Medicine, uses MBSR as its foundation for introducing medical practitioners to the benefits of mindfulness in their personal and professional lives.
