This statue, on the west side of St Paul's Cathedral, facing Swanston Street, commemorates the navigator and cartographer, Captain Mathew Flinders. The bronze statue stands high on a granite plinth. The granite plinth is engraved on the front with the name of Flinders and has a brass plaque attached that summarises the Australian exploration achievements of this great navigator. The statue depicts Flinders in his Commander's uniform, standing on the prow of a boat being brought ashore by two seamen. The statue as created by sculptor Charles Web Gilbert and cast in Paris by Barbedienne however, sadly Gilbert died just days before it returned to Melbourne. It was unveiled on 8 November 1925, in the presence of more than 3000 people including the sculptor's widow. The statue of Captain Mathew Flinders is in a very prominent location at the intersection and Flinders and Swantson Streets, Melbourne, directly opposite Flinders Street Station and Federation square.
