Great historical area to visit and search for the unknown.
a good easy 2hr drive along the whites creek dirt road of the mulligan highway..no standing buildings anymore in the main township, but got some interesting old mining machinary relics, just make sure you stick to the main road by keeping in between the white reflector post on side of the road, there are alot of other little roads that lead to private property..mining leases i assume.
Love the maytown track.. Must be sold sufficient and track ready as is an extremely difficult track
The thrill of getting there.
Nice area to see some of Australia's cold rush history. Not a lot to see though. The former building locations are now indicated by nameplates (butchers, hotels etc) and you can see the original gutter. It's hard to imagine 100 years ago almost 20.000 people lived in this place. Must have been extremely hard. Coming from the north the signs on roads towards Maytown are not clear. I would say GPS is a necessity. Entry from the south is a lot easier, and so are the roads.
Grear trip out on an easy 4wd track. Worth the trip only 2.20hrs from palmer river road house. To pub and feed also. Lots of machinery in the bush. Get a good mud map from road house
Cool and a bit spooky
