Bit pricey but a good place to eat Really enjoyed my meal The Jailhouse Grill is a well known restaurant in Launceston The Jail House Grill continues a 140 year tradition by offering fine food and beverage to locals and travellers alike. The building on Wellington St, Launceston was constructed in the mid 1800’s using handmade convict bricks from the local “brickfields” some 500 meters away. The design is typical of a Victorian Georgian Inn or Public House of the era. Proudly registered with the Tasmanian Heritage Council, the building where the Jail House Grill is, is regarded as important to the Launceston community’s sense of place. It was originally known as the Prince of Wales.

Our group was completely starving after our long hike and entered Jailhouse without any real expectations. However, the place turned out to be the most impressive place I have ever been to. Food was absolutely delicious, served in amazing portion sizes and cooked to perfection. Our favourites were the pork ribs. Steaks were absolutely excellent as well. I particularly loved the all-you-can-eat salad bar that offers a great variety of not just salads but side dishes such as noodles, stir-fry vegggies as well. It is a shame we are not Launceston locals. If we were, we would be dining here every week! Fantastic.
Got to be one of the best meals I've ever had. If you visit Launceston you HAVE to come here! The salad bar is fantastic too.
Came here after reading reviews. Did not disappoint! Family with teenagers and we had steak and lamb rump. Steak was cooked to perfection served with crisp potatoes. Salad bar was a lovely addition and had plenty to choose from. Staff were attentive and polite and we didn’t wait for anything. Not the cheapest steak but so worth it. Highly recommend!

Good place to have a really nice meal. We stopped for lunch and the full menu was available which we like as we tend to eat just once in the late afternoon / early evening and like a more sizable meal. Ordered the 500mg filet steak and it was cooked PERFECTLY! Also, ordered the ribs with bbq plum sauce. Both meals come with salad bar which is a nice touch.
Steak is a bit dry, I ordered medium rare. My friend recommended this place, so it might depend.
Perfectly cooked steak! Loved the choice of salads from the salad bar, especially the stir fry vegetables. Good selection of Tasmania whisky from the bar.
