We started as two mums with children on the autism spectrum who had nothing out there for our teens to socialise. So we began last February with our ASD Teen Social group. This group has expanded and so too has our committee, with third mum joining us and an occupational therapist. The teen dinners are for both teens and their carers to sit and eat a meal and connect with other like minded people. The teens sit on one side of the room playing games and chatting whilst the parents sit together networking and empowering each other. The results so far have been extraordinary and there has been so many positive stories to come out of these dinners. We have now started an 18+ dinner for young adults with ASD. The aim of these dinners is to enable these young adults to integrate within the community, form friendships, potentially link in with other support available within the community and empower and educate them to know that they are very worthy participants in our community. The current statistics in regards to individuals living with ASD are very alarming with employment, suicide, mental illness and inability to leave the house. Whilst we are aware we cannot fix all this, we aim to try and make slight improvements and this is the aim of Different Journeys holding these monthly dinners.
