This memorial plaque, located at the apex Burston Reserve, commemorates the centenary of the death of Caroline Chisholm (1808-1877). Caroline dedicated her life to help people in need. She began her social work in India where her husband, Captain Archibald Chisholm, was posted. Seeing the bleak living conditions that the wives and daughters of British soldiers had to face there, she started a school for them and greatly improved their standard of living. Life next took her to Sydney, Australia where she worked tirelessly on finding work opportunities for female immigrants from England. In 1854, she arrived at Port Phillip where she successfully campaigned for the erection of shelter sheds for diggers along the route to the Victorian goldfields. From her work in Australia she earned the title of the emigrants friend.
