This up-ended W-class tram is officially titled "Raising the Rattler Pole – the last of the Connies." It was commissioned by the City of Melbourne Public Art Program in 2013 as a tribute to one of Melbourne’s iconic heroes – the W-Class ‘rattler’ tram. It's an actual scale, artistic recreation of W-class tram number 1040, which was built in 1956. It's 10 metres high, upended, jutting 8 metres out of the ground and tilted at 10 degrees. At night, the headlights glow and windows light up to create the illusion of bustling inside activity. The name of the artist who created it is David Michael Bell.
