The medical staff were excellent that is why I have given 5 stars. However, the pre operation reception area was overcrowded. Incoming patients and carers mixed with patients in operation gear and sensitive little children also. In Intensive Care, as I came out of an anaesthetic, there were THREE (3) fire drills with alarms blaring and a loud male voice made the same announcement. It was quite shocking to someone who is just regaining consciousness.

Calvary John James is a private hospital and so you pay for parking - it is also in a reasonably intensely officed part of town, so the charging tends to keep the car parks available for visitors rather than workers from the surrounding businesses. On the upside you get excellent care, lovely staff, a maximum of one other person sharing your room, carpeted wards, superior food - but it is not a Public Hospital (ie 100% covered by Medicare) so check your Health Insurance before selecting it.

My nine year old son has autism and is getting surgery as a public patient right this minute. I'm so grateful to all the nurses and doctors for this experience of his first anaesthetic. They made special allowances for his needs and something that could have been incredibly traumatic for him was really smooth. They had a quiet space for us beforehand so he didn't get as distressed or anxious beforehand. When he started getting agitated they took steps that helped him calm himself down. They asked me what would be best for him in different situations. My son will experience being misunderstood and be discriminated against his whole life because he will be perceived as different and strange by other people. I am so tremendously grateful when he isn't treated like his is an extra problem and people do the more that is required to support him. I had tears in my eyes as I was walking away from my safely sleeping baby because I had complete trust in the people looking after him and I was so grateful for this experience. Thank you. Xxx

I had a Total Knee Replacement at CJJ Hospital last week. Being an “out of Towner” I had my pre-operative assessments carried out off site but I was contacted several times by the staff to ensure I was organised. From my first physical presence on the day of my surgery I cannot fault this lovely Hospital. All areas Clerical, Nursing, Auxiliary, Domestic, Medical where beyond reproach. I am a Registered Nurse and have worked in the Public Sector for 45 years and I was more than impressed with the care I received. I was planning on having my second replacement surgery in the local public hospital as it doesn’t need to be attended as urgently but I just don’t think I could after this incredibly positive experience.

My husband has just had a Hip replacement in Calvary John James and I can highly recommend this hospital. Having had 1 hip replacement done in a private hospital in Brisbane only 2 years ago (which was very good), I can only say the Calvary was a lot better. From the initial registration team( who were a delight) to the physio's, porters and nurses, the staff were all absolutely wonderful over the 5days - caring, informative and always available. My husband was in a lot less pain and recovery was much quicker this time due, we believe, to (1) great staff - taking time to explain pain control and processes in the ward post op; and (2) use of the No-Lift equipment used in the hospital. This equipment reduced the pain involved having post-op x-rays and for getting in /out of bed. The food was quite varied and above average for hospital food but sometimes a bit cold by the time it arrived however it is winter in Canberra! No hesitation recommending the Calvary.
