ARC Research Grant into how adults learn a signed language Melbourne Polytechnic and Vicdeaf were proud industry partners for ground breaking research funded by an Australian Research Council Research Grant awarded to Dr Adam Schembri and Dr Louisa Willoughby. This year, we will start to share the results of this project. Stay tuned! Educational Signbank Based on our successful pilot, this funded project provides interpreters and students with a definition of specialised English terms in Auslan. Click on this banner to see a list of terms now available in Signbank, with more terminology to follow in 2019. Online training for Notetakers An online series of modules to develop skills as a notetaker working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Linguistics of Auslan - in Auslan! This series of videos in Auslan provide information about the grammar and use of Auslan. The first three clips are now available and cover the use of space, depicting signs and constructed action. More clips are in the pipeline! Welcome to the deafConnectEd website. We have information for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing, who are studying or just thinking about study. We also offer information and support to teachers and trainers, interpreters and notetakers, so please visit the different sections of our website and contact us if you have any questions. We really value your feedback, so please get in touch if have any suggestions for our website or our services in general. 2017 and 2018 are shaping up to be a busy for deafConnectEd. We continue to provide our core services, which include: supporting Disability Liaison Officers (DLOs) working with students who are Deaf or hard of hearing. This includes the provision of an interpreter booking service for DLOs through our interpreter booking service (CABS) expanding information available to students who are Deaf or hard of hearing on our website providing mentoring and professional development opportunities for newly accredited Auslan interpreters providing notetakers with information and skill development through our online training units providing an online deafness awareness unit for teaching staff working with students who are Deaf or hard of hearing We also continue to work with our partners in delivering a range of Auslan-related services, including: another successful Auslan ‘breadth’ program for undergraduate students at the University of Melbourne delivered in July 2017 delivery of a 40-week Auslan program for the Victorian Deaf Education Institute We are particularly excited about our partnership with the Victorian Government Department of Premier and Cabinet for funding towards an Auslan and English literacy program for deaf migrants, which will be offered in 2018. Another significant project is the development of new content for Signbank, the online Auslan dictionary, which is supported by funding from the Department of Education and Training. This new content will include signs, definitions and information for key subject areas in Vocational Education, developed in conjunction with Deaf professionals and interpreters working in these areas. The additional content for Signbank will support students and interpreters, as well as Auslan learners. They are hearing educators of sign language. They share the same floor as Auslan at Melbourne Polytechnic in Prahran building MK, level 4. I believe that they work closely with Auslan. They are also a good group of people dedicated to the learning of sign language.
