Operated through my website [www.emilieslanguages.com] my language business has returned to where it all began. Building on from past experiences in New Zealand and Laos, lessons in Dutch, French, Spanish and English are offered in and around Darwin (NT) catering to all levels and all ages. What sets me apart from other language services is that I provide lessons using my own meticulously devised curriculum, with materials created in accordance with my students' needs and wishes. These vary depending on their reason for language learning, be it with the intent to travel or settle abroad, to facilitate communication with (often extended) family, to gain an additional skill, to broaden academic and work opportunities, or simply as a pass-time. The resources I create are mainly offered in the form of handouts. These contain a healthy balance of vocabulary and grammar, based on previously established or relevant topics. Short stories, games and oral stimuli are then made to enhance understanding, as well as flashcards to aid studying. All of which is further complemented by existing visual, musical and written multimedia, which - where needed - is translated by me. With younger children, languages are taught through play-based learning. Usually this is achieved through story-telling, songs and other fun immersive activities, but the incorporation of day-to-day routines can also prove beneficial. This is then combined with my 15+ years of experience of working with children in both the educational (mainstream and Montessori schools) and private sectors. As always, flexibility, patience, adaptability and hard work seem to be my key ingredients in creating a successful and stimulating learning environment, as well as an indescribable passion for languages and people.
