Psychmatch is an early stage social enterprise aimed at improving treatment outcomes in mental health. We're developing a tool that systematically matches patients and psychologist based on characteristics that have been researched to may have an impact on treatment outcomes. We want to overcome the luck of the draw when it comes to finding the right psychologist. It's common for people not to know what ‘right’ is, and even if they did, the screening and selection at the GP is ad hoc. Some will ask for preferences, others won't. In practice, this means most people cycle through a few psychologists before landing one that's right for them. Based on a large body of research we know that a good therapeutic alliance has a significant impact on success of the treatment. But we also know that the dropout rate for treatment is between 17-50 per cent. Some people dropout for reasons that can’t be controlled for. We want to reduce elements of the dropout rate that can be controlled for. Close to 80 per cent of people tell us they are not at all confident in identifying the ‘right’ psychologist and more than 60 per cent tell us they personally know of friends or family who have had difficulty finding the right psychologist for them.
