This is a cute little museum just outside the C.B.D. of Adelaide, pretty easy to get to by public transport. It’s only open on weekends. We came on a quiet Sunday morning and we were virtually the only people. We paid 26 for two seniors' tickets and a short guided tour. The house belonged to Henry Ayers, by all accounts, an influential and successful politician who was premier of South Australia multiple times between 1863 and 1873, and after whom Ayers Rock was named. The house was built by his father-in-law, later given to Henry I believe or sold to him. Whilst the structure of the house is obviously original, most of what is inside has been reconstructed and recreated to resemble what the house would have looked like so in that sense it’s not a complete historical experience, but it does give one some idea of what home living was like in that period: Sans heating, cooling or electricity (not too comfortable, I wouldn’t have thought). The lady who took us on the tour was knowledgeable, friendly and patient, and took the time to explain to us a bit of the history of this state and the man whose home we were touring. But all the staff are friendly and helpful and do their best to make one’s visit an enjoyable and satisfying one. We spent about an hour here all up and enjoyed the visit, but to be honest there isn’t a huge amount to see, and I wouldn’t put it on my must see list when in Adelaide, unless one has a particular interest in history. (which I do!). The downstairs toilets were locked during our visit and inaccessible, but there’s also one upstairs, which was accessible. It was clean and well provisioned. There’s no cafe, but then, you’re a few minutes walk from the centre of the C.B.D., where there are multiple eating and drinking options. At the reception are a few items for sale, although there’s no shop per se.

Very unique place to visit in Adelaide. The interiors of the incredible Victorian House are perfectly conserved and restored, so it's like taking a step back in time and living the sumptuous life of the past for an hour. The staff is really kind, and I took a guided tour which was very interesting and useful to understand how the routine in the mansion should be when it was built by his founder Henry Ayers.
Beautiful, well maintained and full of culture place!! I was amazed about the architecture and the decoration. Have been to a lot of museums but this one left me speechless. Highly recommended
We enjoyed a lot learning the history of the Revolution of Australia. Very interesting exhibits throughout the museum, of interest and relevance to most people. All the items were properly placed. Their collection was also amazing. The atmosphere was calm and positive. The security section is also highly attentive. A unique place to visit in Adelaide!!!
Ayers House Museum is a great spot right in the centre of Adelaide. As they say, it is the finest Victorian-era house in South Australia. There are three levels of awesomeness to explore, across the bedrooms, dining rooms and offices. My favourite room is Henry Ayer's office on the lower level. There's a giant and awesome desk, beautiful architecture, and being below ground is always a few degrees cooler than upstairs.
Ayers house is one of the best historical places in Adelaide. The Victorian house is elaborate and decorated, all of the rooms magnificent and well preserved.
Really enjoyed this old place and the staff were helpful
Wonderful to visit and hear about the history of a Victorian era house. Rosemary was our Guide and she was so knowledgeable and patience with us. Highly recommend a visit to see the house and meet the volunteers who work there.
