I have never ever seen so full and well informed museum. Right from dinosaur fossils to the age old history of aboriginals, you can find anything here. Best for a school trip or a random evening strolling for a visitor.
I love the massive collection of indigenous artefacts and the care and respect the museums shows when exhibiting them. The changing exhibitions are very often perfectly curated, and the cafe is pretty nice also. The only thing that gets me down are the stuffed animals, I can't get over the fact that they all had to die to be displayed for the visitor's entertainment and education. And then there's the lion...
It's a good place to visit. My only issue is that it feels like it has been the same for years. It would be nice if it could have new displays and a children's play area out the front.
Great museum. Many interesting stuffs to see & to snap photos. Many levels of interests for adults & kids. Recommended to visit when in Adelaide.
I have not seen any museum like this in Australia. Very informative and loads of things available on each floow. Will take minimum 4 hrs to see this place. If you are an enthusiast, then you will spend whole day.
This free entry museum starts with a display of animals from around the world. From there you can travel via various floors to other places and /or times. A magical place perfect for an hour or two or a day. Also a great place to take children.
S.A.M. is a large and airy museum, and I spent a pleasant two hours here, meandering through the various galleries. It was fairly quiet on a weekday morning, just a smattering of other visitors, which made the experience relaxed and enjoyable. I spent most of my time at the large Pacific Cultures gallery on the top level, with its masses of displays of various artefacts from the Pacific Islands. There are some amazing old photos and short video clips, some dating back to the 1930s. The Aboriginal gallery downstairs is a must-see for anyone interested in this ancient culture, although the lighting is a bit dim, making it difficult to read some of the panels. Staff are friendly and helpful. Entry is free, and the location is easy to get to by public transport. As you would expect, the toilets are clean and well provisioned. Right next door is the Art Gallery and the State Library, and a few metres away, via the Adelaide Central Plaza, is the Rundle Mall, the heart of the Adelaide C.B.D. It’s well worth a visit when you’re in Adelaide. I would go so far as to say that this is the number one cultural attraction.
