Jews lived in Maitland from 1830 onwards. The community was active 1850-1870, though never numbering more than about 70 families. The synagogue, with foundation stone dated 1879, could seat 364, but closed in 1898. The Maitland Synagogue was the first in Australia to be built outside of a capital city. It was the focus of a strong Jewish community from 1879 until 1898. Since then it has been a school, a meeting hall and offices.
