The Richmond River Historical Society Inc. (RRHS) is based in the city of Lismore in the Northern Rivers region of NSW. RRHS was founded in 1936, one of the first three historical societies formed in New South Wales outside the Sydney region. Its mission is to collect, preserve, display and disseminate historical material relevant to the continuing history of North Eastern NSW. It consists entirely of volunteers who maintain, develop, interpret and promote the collections of the Lismore Museum and its Research Centre Archives. The award-winning Lismore Museum has one of the best historical collections in regional Australia. The all-volunteer museum is managed by the Richmond River Historical Society, which since 1936 has collected, preserved, displayed and disseminated the fascinating history of this multicultural community of some 140,000 people. The story of these peoples is told in the displays and research archives of the museum. Descendants wishing to understand their origins, and newcomers wanting to discover the area’s history, are welcome to visit the displays and to also research in the extensive archives
A poorly understood and underutilized resource. Well set out and interesting museum with excellent local history library and documentation.
