When I picked up my dog from here he was extremely distraught and completely freaking out tail between his leg and eyes darting around everywhere. Not to mention that they had organised to rehome him without even looking for his owner he was two houses down from where he lived when he was found because the cheeky boy got out the open gate when the garden was being maintained . The facility was an utter mess and I was concerned that he hadn't even been fed as they had Expressed so much that they fed him so much food but he ate more food when I got him home then I have ever seen him eat in one sitting in his life. And to think I wanted to give my time to volunteer here.

Great place to get a puppy or to adopt an older dog. Animals are well taken care of. If my husband let me I would have taken them all. But we only came away with one. Friendly staff and volunteers. Highly recommend getting your next or first pup from them.

I had terrible experience with the manager, Robyn a couple of weeks ago after trying to help an elderly couple re-home 5 stray cats on their property. Robyn reluctantly agreed to take them but wasn’t happy when I said we wouldn’t pay for them to be tested for feline aids as they weren’t our own cats that we were surrendering. When I took the first cat there she asked me to come into her office to complete paperwork. Her manner was extremely rude and demeaning. She made it clear the cat would be euthanased if it tested positive for aids, refusing to call me and give me the option of picking him up. She seemed to be doing everything to deter me from leaving the cat there; even accusing me of being abusive and making me feel like some sort of criminal. I ended up leaving the shelter in tears but, after giving it some thought, I returned there with a friend for support and asked for the cat back. Robyn was more than happy to give him to me, her manner completely changed now that there were witnesses present, including a couple of volunteers. I have since found another shelter that has agreed to take the cats and they have been fantastic. I cannot believe that the manager of the Hahndorf Interim Animal Shelter is treating well-meaning people in this way. I also cannot believe that a supposedly ‘no kill’ shelter is euthanasing cats who test positive for aids but could still go on to lead a perfectly healthy symptom free life. I have since found out that the Hahndorf Animal Shelter is one of only two shelters in South Australia who are doing this. Sue Whelan (one of the founders of the shelter), god rest her soul, would be turning in her grave if she knew this was happening. I had quite a few dealings with Sue over the years, she was such a kind and compassionate person; its such a shame the Shelter is now being run by someone so completely different.

Lovely people, take care to access the best fit for adoptions. Hours are not to great to fit into busy schedules, not the cleanest but they are keeping the animals well loved, fed and cared for.

What a great place, giving abandoned and surrendered cats and dogs a second chance in life. To find their forever home. They run solely on the generosity of the community close and far. Please consider them when you are looking for a cat or dog. Please donate or even volunteer. This place is amazing and has saved thousands of animals over the years. And hope to save thousands more in the future.
