I've been a colon cancer patient at this hospital for 5 years and I am now discharged and in remission. My treatment, not including surgery, hospital convalescence and chemotherapy must have cost Australian taxpayers hundreds of thousand dollars. All I ever had to pay over the years was maybe less than a hundred dollars for take-home medicines. At almost all times and at nearly every visit I was treated kindly, competently and professionally by all medical and ancillary personnel. Many of the staff caring for me were, like me, migrants or from migrant families. I am aware that my experience is not shared by every patient. Nevertheless may I point out to all and sundry how lucky we are to live in this country with an almost totally free health system. In particular, migrants from countries where there is no public health should think twice, nay, thrice, before complaining about this hospital, its staff or their treatment.
